Description
Flowering dogwood is the Virginia state tree and flower, and is a small deciduous tree that blooms early in the spring. Although the flowers are actually small yellow clusters, these clusters are surrounded by four white petal-like bracts to resemble a flower. Dark green oval leaves turn various shades of red in the fall, and bright red fruits in late summer and early fall are great for attracting birds. Flowering dogwood is a popular ornamental.
