VOLUNTEER – Upper Rapp Water Quality Monitoring

January 17 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

We are hosting a 6 month community science water quality program in Upper Rappahannock waterways from Jan to June 2024!

On Jan 17th at 4:30pm, FOR Restoration Coordinator Ellie Young will meet volunteers at Yowell Meadow Park to demonstrate how to take a water sample and hand off all water sampling supplies. If you can’t make it in person, that is not a problem! We will have digital materials very soon to explain how to sample and we can set up an alternative date to hand off your sampling supplies.

Volunteers will…

  • Select one (or more) of the 12 sites to sample from and set a monthly date and time to sample from Jan – June (ex. 3rd Thurs of every month)
  • Visit their designated local river spot monthly to bottle a sample of water & record the water’s temperature
  • Drop off their water samples in Culpeper at the Environmental System Services (ESS) by 3pm. Samples can sit on ice for up to 24 hours which allows for some flexibility on your sample time!
  • Notify the coordinator when their month’s sample has been completed and dropped off

The sites range from the Thornton River in Rappahannock County to Mountain Run in Culpeper, so there is a spot that works for everyone!

ALL SITES HAVE BEEN CLAIMED BY VOLUNTEERS – THANK YOU!
