Interested in shaping the next generation of Environmental Stewards and volunteering on our field trips? Join our FOR Lower Rappahannock Education staff for volunteer training for field trips. Volunteers need to be at least 18, pass a State Police background check, be available on weekdays starting in the fall for K-12 field trips, and have transportation to field trip sites in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.
Volunteers only need to sign up for ONE training day
We will cover best practices for working with youth in the outdoors, risk management, and teaching our most popular outdoor lessons. We welcome all levels of experience and understanding of topics. For more information, please contact Robin Didlake at robin.didlake@riverfriends.org.
Requirements: Must be able to stand for over one hour and walk on uneven terrain, and show proof of a criminal background check prior to volunteering at the first field trip ($20 for Volunteers for the Commonwealth of Virginia).
A general schedule of the day will be as follows:
9-9:15 am Check-in, Coffee, Introductions
9:15-9:45 am Working with youth, Risk management, Background check information
9:45-10:00 am Field Trip Basics: Information on how our field trips are set up and their locations
10-10:45 am Lesson #1 Overview: Nature Hike in WILD in the WOODS
10:45-11:00 am Break/Drive down to Cat Point Creek Pier
11am-12pm Lesson #2 Overview: We All Live Downstream, Water quality testing, & Games We Play
