The Effects of PFAS and Biosolids on Virginia’s Land
Join the Potomac Riverkeeper Network, Friends of the Rappahannock and John Marshall Soil & Water Conservation District for a presentation and discussion of biosolids application and PFAS “forever chemicals”.
The application of biosolids have been an essential low cost fertilizer commonly used on agricultural fields across Virginia for decades. While this is used as a reuse of a waste product, recent data has shown unsafe levels of contamination from PFAS forever chemicals in biosolids. This presents an unsafe and unacceptable risk to our soils, streams, livestock, crops, drinking water, and public health.
Concerned citizens and organizations across Virginia and the nation, are advocating for accountability and transparency concerning PFAS contamination in biosolids. Our agricultural producers deserve to know if biosolids proposed for application on their land are contaminated with PFAS and the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) needs to adopt regulations to ensure our communities are protected.
Join us to learn more! We will provide a background on the issues and an update on any legislation that is being heard at the General Assembly in Richmond.
