Fones Cliff Volunteer Tree Planting

April 13 @ 9:30 am - 2:00 pm

Free

Join Friends of the Rappahannock and United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to reforest over 15 acres of land at the iconic Fones Cliff in Richmond County, Virginia.

The project is focused on planting trees to reduce erosion, protect water quality, and improve habitat for fish and wildlife. This property has an incredible view and holds substantial historical significance. In the last year, the Conservation Fund has worked tirelessly to purchase and protect 250 acres of Fones Cliffs through a donation of the lands to the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge! This means the property will be managed by biologists and other scientists at USFWS. One of the first steps in habitat restoration including the reforestation of several large plots.

We are very fortunate to be teaming up with local schools for these projects to build in lasting education and stewardship lessons in addition to replanting a forest on conserved lands.

Volunteers should plan to arrive at 9:30am at the Fones Cliff Tract of the Rappahannock River Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The entrance is just past 709 Carter’s Wharf Road on the left and will have an event sign displayed. Continue down the road following signs to park.  GPS coordinates of turn off: 38.079677, -76.911639

We have all the materials needed including tools, gloves, plants, water, and snacks. We recommend bringing a hat or visor and a reusable water bottle. If you plan on staying past lunchtime, you can pack a lunch or visit a restaurant in Warsaw, Virginia.

Conservation staff will be on the site to provide instruction on planting methods, safety talk, and to answer questions about the project and the larger restoration efforts taking place across the region.

All participants must complete and sign a WAIVER Any participate under 18 must have a waiver signed by a parent or guardian.

If you have any questions please contact FOR Deputy Director at bryan.hofmann@riverfriends.org or call 540-373-3448

This project is made possible thanks to our partners at USFWS, Richmond County Public Schools, and funding through National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF), Arbor Day Foundation and the sale of the Chesapeake Bay License Plate.
