Carter’s Creek Oyster Reef Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
June 15, 2017 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pmFree
Join Friends of the Rappahannock, the VCU Rice Rivers Center, Waterman Heritage Tours, Tides Inn, and Kellum Seafood as we welcome Virginia’s Secretary of Natural Resources Molly Ward as she joins us to dedicate the newest addition to the Governor’s Virginia Treasures program.
This past winter, Friends of the Rappahannock worked with VCU’s Oyster Shell Recycling Program Kellum Seafood, and local partners to restore a historic oyster reef using recycled oyster shell. This reef is now protected as a sanctuary, will provide valuable habitat for fish and wildlife, filter and clean the waters of Carter’s Creek, and be a long term outdoor classroom for school groups in the region.
This event will showcase this newly restored reef and provide Virginia wine, beer, and local oysters. After the ribbon cutting, we hope you’ll join us on the FOR boat to help us install more recycled oyster shell into the creek.
We hope to see you at the Tides Inn to learn about our work in Carter’s Creek and throughout the rest of the Rappahannock River watershed.
Special thanks to Ardent Brewery and Port City Brewery for supporting this event!
